It is essential to reflect on the importance of inclusion in the technology sector. According to a recent Google study, "The Impact and Future of Artificial Intelligence in Brazil," there is an alarming lack of diversity in AI companies: 71% do not have LGBTQIAPN+ individuals in leadership positions.
In 2024, the inclusion of LGBTQIAPN+ individuals should be a standard practice. Diversity of thought and experiences is vital for progress and innovation in the technology sector. Companies that do not value inclusion are stuck in the past and risk becoming obsolete. True innovation happens when all voices are heard and valued.
Artefact’s Efforts in Latin America
At Artefact LatAm, we are committed to changing this scenario. Currently, 21% of our employees identify as LGBTQIAPN+. This figure reflects our ongoing efforts to promote an inclusive and diverse work environment. We have implemented several initiatives to increase diversity and ensure all our employees feel valued and included.
The creation of affirmative action positions has been a key part of our strategy, with 70% of our hires coming from these positions. This initiative will continue throughout the year, reinforcing our commitment to diversity. To monitor our progress, we have implemented a diversity census that measures gender, ethnic, racial, regional diversity, neurodiversity, and psychiatric diagnoses. We use the data from this census to create a dashboard that tracks our diversity indicators.
We have set goals and KPIs in collaboration with the Executive Committee and responsible leadership, as well as developed strategic actions to achieve these diversity goals. The unification of minority groups is promoted through the creation of four affinity groups that meet monthly: Women@Artefact, LGBTQIA+, Black, and Neurodiversity.
In addition, we produce monthly texts in our newsletter for commemorative dates related to diversity and conduct sharings, such as “Privileges and the Myth of Meritocracy” scheduled for the second semester and a special sharing for Pride Month.
Benefits of Inclusion
Including LGBTQIAPN+ professionals goes beyond meeting a diversity goal; it is about creating a safe environment where everyone can thrive and reach all levels and positions. Diverse teams bring unique perspectives that are crucial for solving complex problems in new and innovative ways. Ignoring this diversity is missing out on growth and evolution opportunities.
“The inclusion of LGBTQIAPN+ individuals in the workforce must span all roles and levels, not just operational positions. It’s about valuing professionals equally, addressing bias, and bringing genuine opportunities to the community.”Paolo Gozdzink, especialista em marketing da Artefact LatAm
Biases in artificial intelligence can hinder many aspects within corporations. These biases mainly arise in two ways: from the data used to train the systems and from the stereotypes of the developers. If the data reflects an underrepresentation of groups like LGBTQIAPN+, AI perpetuates these inequalities. For example, an AI used in recruitment might favor candidates who align with historical leadership patterns, excluding minorities. Additionally, stereotypes embedded in AI design can reinforce prejudices, such as virtual assistants with female voices suggesting that assistive tasks are inherently “feminine.”
Leading tech companies, like Artefact, demonstrate how inclusion can drive innovation. At Artefact LatAm, diversity has been a catalyst for creativity and problem-solving. We have developed various initiatives aimed at making the workplace safe, welcoming, and truly inclusive, including training, literacy programs, affirmative positions, connection spaces, and more.
Representation is crucial for inspiring positive changes throughout the organization. Professionals like Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, exemplify how diversity at the top can positively influence corporate culture.
Diversity is a strategic imperative in the technology sector. Diverse teams not only perform better financially but are also more innovative and effective in problem-solving. As we celebrate LGBTQIAPN+ Pride Month, we reaffirm our commitment to diversity and inclusion, recognizing that true innovation is only possible when all voices are heard and valued.
